Can the rest of MLS survive the Beckham effect?
The question is, will the new fans and sponsors stick around en masse when their favourite footballer-turned-celebrity falls out of form and eventually retires? By the end of his five-year contract, David Beckham could be struggling to make the squad in Los Angeles. Both he and the league are happy to enjoy the financial windfall while they can, but no matter how carefully the league invests in the future it remains impossible to gauge just how big of a drop-off in interest we’ll see after Beckhamania subsides.
